Snyder-Robinson Syndrome

The Snyder-Robinson Foundation is a non-profit organization formed in 2014 to advance scientific and medical research relating to a rare genetic disease called Snyder-Robinson Syndrome (SRS). SRS is caused by a mutation of the SMS gene. The resulting disease is characterized by intellectual disability, seizure disorders, hypotonia, osteoporosis, and a host of other medical issues – and its effects can be devastating. SRS is also the only disease known to be caused by an imbalance of polyamines – small molecules that are present in every living organism.  Polyamines are necessary for the normal development of the brain, bone, and other tissues – yet little is known about how they function.  Therefore, the study of SRS presents a unique opportunity to understand polyamines and the role they might play in many common diseases.
